Top 3 Things to Consider before Buying Your First Luxury Timepiece, Anthony Farrer

Within the wristwatch dealership value chain, one name continues to pop up- the Timepiece Gentleman. Born Anthony William Farrer in Sherman, Texas, he is one of the leading dealers in new and pre-owned luxury wristwatches in Dallas and, perhaps, the United States. But beyond sales, Anthony continues to gain popularity and influence as a voice in the timepiece sector for his informative social media channels and his general disposition towards helping people make better wristwatch decisions.

For every individual who owns or has ever bought a luxury wristwatch, the questions that cut across include,

  • Where do I start?
  • What do I look out for?
  • What brand, model or design should I buy?

Unfortunately, many people get the wrong answers and learnt hard lessons with their very first purchase. If you’re looking to buy a luxury watch, Anthony says you don’t have to make the same mistake. He has provided three top factors you must consider before you take out your wallet.

1. Purpose

“Every watch is designed to suit a purpose or occasion”, says Anthony. “You shouldn’t wear a sport wristwatch like the Garmin Fenix 6 Sapphire to a dinner. For that, you’ll need the Rolex Submariner Date or any other elegant wristwatch”, he adds. What this means is that you must determine what you intend to use the wristwatch for and then focus on those Timepieces designed for the purpose. “Thankfully, luxury wristwatches are quite an everyday experience, except you’re a handyman”, Anthony muses. He adds that most luxury watches can be worn for many different occasions.

2. What Makes You Feel Good?

At the end of the day, it is how you feel about the wristwatch that matters. Even after you’ve listened to the experts, checked out the price, confirmed the authenticity, if it doesn’t excite you or make you feel nice, then you shouldn’t get it. But don’t take our word for it, take Anthony’s. “If a watch has met all your criteria, but you do not feel good wearing it, there’s no point buying it because you won’t be happy”. But you should consider the quality of the watch, its authenticity and your budget. All of these must work together with what you want.

3. Budget

Your budget determines a whole lot of things, including what you go home with at the end of the day. For some people looking to splurge, their preference determines what they spend on a watch. But if you’re riding on a budget, you’d need to decide how to work with it. As Anthony asks, “Would you rather do pre-owned instead of a brand new Phillippe Patek or Omega? It is important because you’ll realize that you’ll save a whole lot of money if you opt for a pre-owned and many of them are in excellent condition.

“But if you want that feel of being the first person to wear it, the unwrapping and the VIP treatment you get in the designer shop, by all means, go for the new watch. At the end of the day, it is your budget that determines what you get,” he adds. Anthony Farrer says with the three factors above, you’re off to a great start. Other factors like determining the Authenticity through research, reading online reviews, visiting a few stores to see for yourself, and having a meaning to the action of getting your first wristwatch are also very important.
